Want to know How to do A Fire Drill Correctly?

Monday 19th June 2017

Fire drills are simple right? (we can all agree it's not difficult to walk out of a building) but despite this, there are actually quite a few aspects that must be thought about carefully. What if a particular exit is blocked?  What if a staircase or corridor is filled with smoke?  How would adults help children or anyone with a disability (if there are any) and other adults evacuate in that instance? The problem with many fire drills carried out  is the regularity and familiarity of the event - using the same routes and the same procedures over and over again.  Many people focus on simply how fast they can get everyone to evacuate - and whilst this is an excellent goal to…

Smoke alarms 'fail to wake children'

Thursday 23rd February 2017

Forensic scientists and fire investigators have warned that smoke alarms may not wake children. Research by Dundee University and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue found that of 34 children tested, 27 repeatedly slept through smoke detector alarms. They have developed an alarm with a lower pitch and a woman's voice, which issues a warning: "Wake up, the house is on fire." They now want 500 families to test the new alarm. Prof Niamh Nic Daeid, a forensic scientist at Dundee, said: "Boys are especially hard to wake, and we think they will respond to a human voice." Standard smoke alarms have a frequency of around 3,000Hz, but the prototype has a lower pitch of 520Hz, to which young children are more likely to respond. In…

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said that more than 40 firefighters - using four fire engines and a turntable ladder - were needed to extinguish the blaze. The BAFSA spokes person said that a properly installed and maintained sprinkler system would have suppressed the fire and limited the damage. A research study carried out by Optimal Economics earlier this year on behalf…

Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. There are many myths around PAT testing and its frequency, here are answers to five common queries. 1: Portable Electrical Devices must be tested every year, is this correct? The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. However, the Regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently (i.e. inspection or testing of electrical appliances isn't a legal requirement, nor do they make it a legal requirement to undertake this annually). 2: How frequently do Electrical Appliances need to…

Why you should provide fire safety training to your staff!

Friday 6th January 2017

For businesses, this is a course of particular importance because of the legal responsibilities placed on employers under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 which came into effect in 2006. Fire extinguishers are placed strategically throughout your workplace, but that is not enough to ensure the safety of all workers in the event of a fire? Fire safety goes far beyond having fire extinguishers. Worksites should have a complete plan in place so that workers know how to react in the event of a fire. Fire safety training provides employees with the knowledge they need to prevent a fire from occurring as well as how to react to a fire. Fire safety training can mean the…

What are the benifits of Online Training?

Thursday 5th January 2017

Online training is a cost-effective way for employees to obtain new and continuing learning. However some organizations are slow to make the move from in-house training to online training and some are reluctant to even consider the change in the first place. If this is you, we offer the following considerations: E-learning is effective for training across multiple locations (and saves money at the same time) Organizations benefit from online training in many ways, firstly all employees can take the exact same training program from anywhere they want, at any time. If employees can take a training course from their desks, organizations no longer have to hold day-long training sessions with a trainer teaching materials to a room full of people. This means decreased…
